The world-famous Tennis Star Serena Williams, who gave birth to a baby girl named Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. in September 2017, is planning to make her comeback at 2018 Australian Open. It was revealed by tournament director Craig Tiley while making an announcement of the increased prize money for the 2018 tennis tournament.
Tiley said, “Serena will be back. We look forward to welcoming her and again go on that journey of breaking the all-time record for the most number of grand slams.” He added, “Serena is a truly remarkable athlete and she hasn’t ruled out a return to the Australian Open,”.
Tiley also said, “We have a special relationship with Serena, the Williams family, both her and Venus. She wants to come back in 2018 and defend her title. Obviously, at training now, there is several months to go. It will be up to her as far as where she is with her fitness.”
There are very few people who know that Serena Williams was eight-weeks pregnant when she won 2017 Australian Open tournament. “Her baby’s initials are AO [Alexis Olympia] and she’s suggested she should also have her name on the 2017 trophy, so the AO is well and truly top of mind for her at the moment,” Tiley mentioned.
In 2018, the overall prize money pool will be $55 million with a 10% increment while both men’s and women’s singles winners will receive $4 million each, which is an increase of 20% as compared to the previous ones.
Tiley said,”the winners’ prize money had broken a “barrier” that has not been done by any other grand slam or any other event. We have a player relationship that we are very proud of”. He also confirmed that Novak Djokovic and his fellow Andy Murray would play at 2018 Australian Open along with Rafael Nadal and Roger Fedrer.
“I’ve been in contact with all the top players and am pleased to announce we’ll have the full top 100 men and women returning to the Australian Open,” Tiley said. We wish a good luck to all the players and hope that they make new records in the tournament.
